Factors influencing the distribution and composition of the chaparral on Mount Diablo, California

The primary purpose of this study is to describe the various physical and biotic factors which determine or influence the distribution and composition of the chaparral on Mount Diablo, California. The physical factors which are considered include climate, geology, soil, physiography, and fire. A discussion of the responses of several chaparral species to burning is also included. Finally, in an effort to clarify the possible role of competition as a biotic factor, a special set of experiments was initiated. Seeds and seedlings of three species were chosen for this investigation and the preliminary results are presented.
